AIX ODM Updates
AIX ODM Updates
ODM Update
Definition: Object Data Manager (ODM) is a database of system and device configuration information and is part of the AIX operating system. The ODM update supplied by Hitachi is a fileset which contains device definitions that allow AIX to properly recognize Hitachi devices and also sets the required default settings.
MPIO vs non-MPIO: There are two types of ODM updates and it is predicated on whether MPIO is used or not. Multi-Path I/O (MPIO) is a feature available with AIX 5.2 and later and is active by default. If a device has a MPIO-capable device driver then the device can have one or more physical connections (paths) that AIX will manage. Alternatively, for non-MPIO environments such as AIX versions prior to 5.2, or if HDLM is used for multi-pathing or no multi-pathing, then a non-MPIO ODM update is used which is termed a non-default MPIO ODM.

GAD+ALUA MPIO Support
Configuring ALUA when using the MPIO ODM is supported for these microcode levels:
Model | Microcode |
HM900, R900, HM850 | All versions |
HM800 | 83-03-00 and later |
R800 | 80-03-30 and later |
Note the following ALUA caveats:
- ODM fileset for MPIO(devices.fcp.disk.Hitachi.array.mpio.rte) must be installed.
- Auto Failback is available with MPIO_ODM 5410 or later.
- Use the chdev command to change from "single path" to "no_reserve" and algorithm to "round_robin".
- VG needs to be deactivated when changing the storage side ALUA mode (Enable/Disable) or changing optimized non-optimized path settings.
- If the storage side ALUA setting is changed while VG is activated, it might not be applied. You need to deactivate VG, and then activate it.
- When PowerHA clustering software is used with ALUA, if the ALUA mode (Enable/Disable) in the storage is changed or if optimized non-optimized path is changed, restart the server.
- If a path failure occurs before VG is activated, and the path is recovered after VG is activated, it might take time until the path can be used with ALUA (A few minutes).
- To use the configuration of GAD+ALUA, AIX7.1 TL03 or later/AIX6.1 TL09 or later is required.
